Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico on July 25th, 1978, Joaquin Gallegos began his music studies at age seven. At nine, he was given his first electric guitar by his mother. Advancing rapidly under the tuttelage of various teachers, Joaquin was exposed to several styles of music, most notably jazz and funk. He was strongly influenced by Jimi Hendrix. Studying under two great masters of the flamenco guitar, Pedro Cuadra and Chuscales, in 1998, changed Joaquin's life. These two virtuosos from Spain continue to be good friends with Joaquin and both have had a strong influence on his guitar playing. In that same year he met Carlos Lomas, another maestro who continues to be a mentor. Later that year, Joaquin traveled to Granada, Spain, where he lived for a year and studied all that is flamenco and spanish. Since then he has lived for extended periods in Granada and Sevilla and has studied with several maestros, most notably Manolo Sanlucar, Manolo Franco, Emilio Maya, Jesus de Rosario and Anton Jimenez. Living in Sacromonte, the legendary gypsy neighborhood in Granada, Joaquin played for dancers and singers and performed in the legendary Tablao Albaizin. In Sevilla, he accompanied dance classes taught by Concha Vargas and Torombo and performed with dancer/singer Maite Olivares. In 2002, he won 1st prize at the EXPO Flamenco Competition at the Albuquerque International Flamenco Festival, and in 2007 he was a semi-finalist in the "Nino Ricardo" International Guitar Competition in Murcia, Spain. Joaquin released his first solo album "La Jornada" in 2005 and has recorded with several artists. His guitar playing is true to the flamenco tradition and his experience with other styles of music gives him a modern sound that is up to date with the playing heard today in Spain. Joaquin is a knowledgeable teacher and a powerful performer who always moves the audiences who witness him, whether he is playing solo or with the many dancers and singers he accompanies.
